Project Frame
Systems theory explores nature’s transformational abilities when placed under pressure. At key points of stress, new structures emerge from the old structures, even as the larger system remains in a state of dynamic balance. In human systems, while structures can certainly be designed, unprecedented and somewhat unpredictable structures inevitably follow, and these structures—called emergent structures—exemplify, in best case scenarios, creative adaptation. Successful emergent structures respond to feedback loops from the rest of the system, and thus nurture what has nurtured their birth.
This project is being ‘designed’ to allow emergent structures to develop through the creative exploration of its individual members. It aims to inspire creative play with materials that have already been shaped by someone else’s ideas, over half a century ago. It demands the tolerance of discovery. And its ultimate success is dependent upon the presence of permeable boundaries between these members—an openness to feedback loops—in that, even as partners creatively define the development of their own projects, an ongoing dialog with other partners remains integral to the broader health of the system.
